How Much Should You Sell Wedding Cakes For? (2026 Pricing Guide)

The short version: Charge $5 to $6 a serving for a home-baked buttercream wedding cake, $7 or more for fondant, and set a minimum so small cakes are still worth the consultation and the drive. A two-tier cake with a 6-inch and a 9-inch tier feeds 44 at wedding-size slices, so at $5 to $6 it sells for $220 to $264. That same cake costs about $39.74 to make at Walmart.com prices, boards, dowels and boxes included. Charge delivery and setup and the tasting on top, and take a deposit to hold the date. At $3 a serving you keep about $8 an hour once you count the full 11 hours a wedding cake takes, by our estimate.

Checked September 25, 2026: the wedding cake pricing pages of five bakeries (Cake & Bake Fla, Cretia Cakes Bake Shop, Cake Works Bakery, Zell's Cottage Bakery and Sweet Confections Cakes; all but Cretia publish per-serving prices that cover their wedding cakes), The Knot's wedding cake cost page, Wilton's serving chart, Sally's Baking Addiction's homemade wedding cake recipe, supply prices on Walmart.com, a live pull of Homegrown's catalog, and the pricing pages of Homegrown, Hotplate and Square. Honest bounds: store prices move weekly, and the hours below are our estimate, not a measurement. Homegrown customers create an account to place a first order, and Homegrown has no timed drop or countdown release.

A friend's daughter is getting married in June, and she has eaten your birthday cakes for years. She wants you to make the wedding cake. You say yes, then realize you have no idea what to charge for a cake that feeds 100 people, has to stand up in a hot barn, and cannot be late.

Most wedding cake pricing advice gives you a wide per-slice range and stops. That range does not tell you what a slice is, what your cake costs to make, or what the job pays per hour. This guide builds the price from numbers checked on the day it was written: what real bakeries charge per serving, what couples actually spend, how many servings each tier feeds, what a two-tier cake costs you, and how long the whole job takes.

How Much Should You Charge for a Wedding Cake?

Charge $5 a serving for a simple buttercream wedding cake, $6 for piped detail or textured finishes, $7 for fondant, and quote sugar flowers and hand-painted work one cake at a time. Price by the serving, not by the cake, and use the standard wedding serving of about 1 inch by 2 inches by 4 inches tall. Add delivery, setup and the tasting as separate lines.

The ladder is our recommendation. It is built from five bakery price pages loaded September 25, 2026 (at the four that publish wedding prices, buttercream from $5.00 to $8.50 a serving and fondant from $6.00 to $11.50), Wilton's wedding serving chart (6-inch and 9-inch tiers serve 44, 6, 8 and 10-inch tiers serve 74), and the cost build further down.

Three things back that ladder:

  • The four bakeries that publish wedding prices start buttercream at $5.00 to $8.50 a serving. The fifth we checked, Cretia Cakes, gives wedding prices only on request.
  • Your cost per serving is under a dollar. A two-tier cake costs about $39.74 to make, or $0.90 for each of its 44 wedding servings.
  • Your time is the real cost. A wedding cake takes about 11 hours from the first consultation to the setup table by our estimate, and $5 a serving pays about $15.75 an hour of that.

If you are still working out consultations, tastings, delivery and contracts, start with the companion guide on taking wedding cake orders as a cottage baker, which walks through the whole order from inquiry to setup. This guide picks up where its pricing section stops: the per-serving math, with today's prices in it.

What Do Bakeries Charge per Serving for Wedding Cakes?

On September 25, 2026, the four bakeries we checked that publish wedding prices started buttercream wedding cakes at $5.00 to $8.50 a serving and fondant at $6.00 to $11.50. A fifth, Cretia Cakes, gives wedding prices only on request. Every one of the four prices by the serving, and every one charges more for fondant than for buttercream, from $1 to $3 more a serving.

We checked every figure on the bakery's own website on September 25, 2026. Cake & Bake Fla's page names a 45% retainer in one paragraph and 50% in another. Cake Works sets a $300 minimum for wedding cakes. Zell's adds $0.50 to $1.00 a serving for premium flavors and fillings.

Cake & Bake Fla's pricing page is a useful model because it states the serving size right next to the price: buttercream from $5.00, fondant from $7.00, and a line defining the size of one wedding serving. A line that defines the serving next to the price prevents most price arguments before they start.

What to take from the bakery prices:

  • $5 a serving is the common starting line. Two of the four bakeries with published wedding prices start buttercream there.
  • The top of the range is a style choice. Sweet Confections starts at $8.50 and says tinting, mixed flavors between tiers and standard decorations are often already in its price.
  • Extras are usually extra. Delivery, fresh flowers and sugar work are charged on top at the bakeries that name them, though Cake & Bake Fla drops off free near its shop.
  • Bakeries pay rent and staff. You can sit at the low end of this range and still pay yourself about $16 an hour on a small cake, because your kitchen is already paid for.

What Do Couples Actually Spend on a Wedding Cake?

Couples spent $540 on a wedding cake on average, according to The Knot Real Weddings Study of 10,474 US couples who married in 2025. The Knot's lower cost quartile is $300, its median is $480 and its upper quartile is $840. The Knot also reports an average of 117 guests, which works out to about $4.62 a guest.

Move the table left for the price per guest.

Guest countAverage spent on the cakePer guest at the top of the range
1 to 50 guests$360$7.20 at 50 guests
51 to 100 guests$470$4.70 at 100 guests
101 or more guests$620No top to the range, so no per-guest figure
All couples$540$4.62 at the average of 117 guests

Figures from The Knot's "average cost of a wedding cake" page, updated May 7, 2026 and loaded September 25, 2026, which cites The Knot Real Weddings Study. The per-guest column is our math: each range's average divided by the largest guest count in that range, and for all couples, the average divided by 117 guests. The Knot does not publish per-guest figures.

What these numbers mean for your price:

  • $5 a serving lands a little above the national average. The 118-serving cake that fits The Knot's 117 guests is $590 at $5 a serving before delivery, or $630 to $650 with a $40 to $60 delivery line, against The Knot's $540, which counts the delivery fee in.
  • Small weddings pay more per guest. At 50 guests, $360 is $7.20 a head, because every wedding cake carries a fixed amount of work.
  • The Knot's lower quartile is $300. At $5 a serving, $300 buys 60 servings, so a smaller cake than that is where a minimum order protects you. The 44-serving cake at $5 to $6 is $220 to $264, under a $300 minimum like Cake Works', so either quote it at your minimum or set your minimum below it on purpose.
  • Couples budget for this cost. A couple with $540 set aside for the cake is weighing you against other wedding bakers, not a grocery store sheet cake.

How Big Is a Wedding Cake Serving?

A wedding serving is a slice about 1 inch wide, 2 inches deep and 4 inches tall, which is smaller than a party slice of about 1½ by 2 inches. Bakeries price by the wedding serving, so the size you promise decides how many servings you can sell from each tier.

Wilton's cake serving chart is the standard most bakers use. It counts wedding servings for a two-layer tier about 4 inches high, and it notes that a tier 3 to 6 inches high yields the same count, because it is cut the same way.

Scroll right to compare wedding and party servings.

10-inch38286
12-inch56408
14-inch786311½

From Wilton's cake serving chart, loaded September 25, 2026. Wilton's figures are for 4-inch-high round tiers; 3 to 6 inches high yields the same number.

Why the serving size matters to your price:

  • The same cake is 44 servings or 36. A 6-inch and 9-inch cake is 44 wedding servings but 36 party servings. At $5, that is $220 or $180.
  • Say the size in your quote. Write "44 wedding servings, 1 x 2 x 4 inches" so the couple and the caterer cut to the same count.
  • The top tier may not count. Wilton's cutting guide, reproduced on Sweet Confections' pricing page, says the top tier is usually saved for the first anniversary, so it is not counted in the servings. On a 6 and 9-inch cake, leaving out the 6-inch top tier drops the count from 44 to 32, which is $160 at $5 instead of $220. Ask the couple before you count it.

How Many Servings Do Common Tier Sizes Feed?

A two-tier cake with a 6-inch and a 9-inch tier feeds 44, a 6, 8 and 10-inch three-tier cake feeds 74, and a 6, 9 and 12-inch cake feeds 100, all at Wilton's wedding serving size. Match the tiers to the guest count first, then price the servings.

Servings are the sum of Wilton's wedding servings per tier, loaded September 25, 2026. Prices are our math at $5 and $6 a serving, before delivery, setup and the tasting.

For a big guest list, a small display cake plus a plain kitchen cake in the back is a common way to serve everyone. Zell's Cottage Bakery offers kitchen cakes only with wedding cakes of 100 servings or more, in 50 or 100 serving sizes. Price a kitchen cake per serving too, a dollar or so below the display cake, because it skips the decorating time.

What Does a Two-Tier Wedding Cake Cost You to Make?

A two-tier wedding cake with a 6-inch and a 9-inch tier costs about $39.74 to make, $20.55 in ingredients and $19.19 in boards, dowels, a cake drum and boxes, at Walmart.com prices on September 25, 2026. That is about $0.90 for each of its 44 wedding servings. We built it from Sally's Baking Addiction's homemade wedding cake recipe, which uses three 9-inch layers, three 6-inch layers and two batches of vanilla buttercream.

Vendor tip

Sally's recipe says it makes 30 to 35 servings, while Wilton's chart counts the same two tiers as 44 wedding servings. The difference is slice size, not cake. Quote the count you will cut to, and if the couple's caterer is cutting, send them the serving size in writing. At $5 a serving, 44 servings is $220 and 30 servings is $150, so a missing line in the quote can cost you $70 on one cake.

What the cost build tells you:

  • Supplies are almost half the cost. The drum, boxes, dowels and boards add $19.19 to a $20.55 cake. Buying drums and boxes in bulk brings that down.
  • Ingredients are about 47 cents a serving. $20.55 across 44 servings is $0.47 each.
  • Materials are the small part of the price. At $5 a serving, your $39.74 in materials is 18% of a $220 cake. The rest pays for time and risk.

Why Do Butter and Powdered Sugar Drive Your Wedding Cake Cost?

Butter is 37% of the ingredient cost and butter plus powdered sugar is 54%, because American buttercream is mostly those two things and a two-tier wedding cake carries about 2.4 kilograms of frosting. The two frosting batches in Sally's recipe use 678 grams of butter and about 1,560 grams of powdered sugar, more butter than the six cake layers.

How the frosting choice plays out:

  • Store brand butter: $3.06 a pound on Walmart.com, $7.63 for the whole cake.
  • Name brand butter: Kerrygold unsalted was $9.27 a pound the same day, which would put the butter alone near $23.
  • Vanilla adds up. Seven and a half teaspoons of pure vanilla is $3.05, the third biggest ingredient line.
  • Fondant changes the math. Fondant is extra material on top of a layer of buttercream, and it takes more time to roll and smooth, which is why every bakery we checked that publishes wedding prices charges $1 to $3 more a serving for it.

Ways to hold your cost without changing the cake:

  1. Buy butter in 4-pound runs when it goes on sale and freeze it.
  2. Buy the 4-ounce vanilla ($2.44 an ounce) instead of the 1-ounce bottle ($3.24 an ounce).
  3. Buy cake drums, boxes and dowels in packs of 10 or more once you book a second wedding.
  4. Keep the recipe the same for every wedding so your cost sheet stays right.

The four-number formula in how to price baked goods applies to wedding cakes too: ingredients, packaging, your time and your overhead, with a margin on top. The difference with a wedding cake is that time is most of the price.

How Long Does a Wedding Cake Take, and What Is Your Time Worth?

A two-tier wedding cake takes about 11 hours of your time by our estimate, and 6 of those are the bake and decorate time Sally's recipe lists. The rest is the work around the cake: the consultation, the messages, the drive and the setup.

Here is our estimate for one 44-serving cake:

  • Consultation and tasting, 1.5 hours. Meeting the couple, walking through flavors and design, and sending the tasting box home with them.
  • Quote, contract and messages, 1 hour. Writing the quote with the serving count, sending the agreement, and answering the questions that come in before the wedding.
  • Bake, fill, frost and stack, 6 hours. Sally's recipe lists 5 hours of prep, 45 minutes of baking and 6 hours in total, with chilling between the crumb coat and the final frosting.
  • Clean up, 1 hour. Mixer, bowls, six pans, turntable and piping tools.
  • Deliver and set up, 1.5 hours. Driving to the venue, stacking or placing the tiers, adding flowers, and driving home.

That adds up to 11 hours. At $5 a serving, a 44-serving cake keeps you $173.28 after supplies and card fees, which is about $15.75 an hour. At $3 a serving, the same 11 hours pays about $8 an hour.

Bigger cakes pay better per hour, because the consultation, the messages and the drive take about the same time for 44 servings or 118. That is why bakers set a minimum order: Cake Works Bakery's is $300 for a wedding cake.

What Does a 44-Serving Wedding Cake Earn at $3 to $8 a Serving?

A 44-serving two-tier cake keeps you $87.83 at $3 a serving, $173.28 at $5 and $301.45 at $8, after the $39.74 cost and two card payments. Moving from $3 to $5 a serving nearly doubles what the cake pays you.

Card fees are figured at 2.9% + $0.30 on each of two payments, a deposit and a balance, the standard card rate Hotplate lists for its vendors on hotplate.com/pricing, checked September 25, 2026. On Square Invoices at 3.3% + 30¢, each row keeps $0.53 to $1.41 less. Homegrown charges the same rate but takes the whole cake price in one payment at checkout, so there is no deposit and balance to split. The 11 hours is our estimate. Delivery and tasting fees, which you charge on top, are not included, and neither are your mileage or any storefront subscription.

What the table says:

  • $3 a serving is a favor, not a price. Eight dollars an hour does not cover a canceled wedding or a cake that slides in the car.
  • $5 is the working floor. It matches the common bakery starting price and pays about $16 an hour on a small cake.
  • $6 and up is where a small cake pays well. A 44-serving cake at $6 is $264 and pays close to $20 an hour. A bigger cake at the same price pays more per hour.

What Do Vendors on Homegrown Charge for Whole Cakes?

On September 25, 2026, vendors on Homegrown whose storefronts loaded that day listed whole cakes at $25 to $60, with a median of $35, and none of those listed a tiered or wedding cake. Everyday cakes are priced by the cake, and at those prices a slice costs far less than a wedding serving.

From Homegrown's own catalog

In a pull of the Homegrown catalog on September 25, 2026, 1,435 of the 2,702 products listed by 305 vendors were in the Bakery category. We counted whole cakes by name and description, opened each cake vendor's full listing, left out cupcakes, cheesecakes, loaf, pound and upside-down cakes, minis, slices and cake pops, and counted only vendors whose storefront loaded that day. That left 23 whole cakes from 11 vendors: three at $25, seven at $30, five at $35 to $40, three at $50 to $55 and five at $60. None was tiered, and none was listed as a wedding cake.

What the listings teach you:

  • An everyday cake is priced far below a wedding serving. Bakery House lists five 8-inch cakes at $30. Wilton counts an 8-inch round as 24 wedding servings, so that is $1.25 a serving, a quarter of the $5 wedding price.
  • Layer cakes at the top of the range still come in under $2 a serving. Root to Rise, a home-based gluten free bakery in Fairfield, Pennsylvania, lists a 3-layer, 9-inch Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake at $60, about $1.88 a wedding serving.
  • Wedding work is quoted, not listed. The couples who order a wedding cake need a consultation first, so bakers list their everyday cakes and quote the wedding ones.
  • Sizes help. Fewer than half of the 23 listings state a size. Put the size and the number of servings in the product name, like "Vanilla Cake, 8-inch, serves 20."
Phone screenshot of the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake listing from Root to Rise on Homegrown, showing a chocolate layer cake with peanut butter frosting and mini peanut butter cups, the product name, In Stock and a price of $60.00
Root to Rise on Homegrown, seen on a phone: the Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake listing with a photo of the cake, "In Stock" and a price of $60.00. Captured September 25, 2026.

The gap between a $30 birthday cake and a $220 wedding cake is not greed. A wedding cake carries a consultation, a contract, a fixed date that cannot move, and a delivery you cannot redo. Your everyday cakes are often where a couple first tastes your work, which is why they belong on a page people can order from.

How Much More Should Fondant, Sugar Flowers and Custom Designs Cost?

Add $1 to $2 a serving for fondant, add $0.50 to $1.00 a serving for premium flavors and fillings, and quote sugar flowers and hand-painted work as their own line. Our $1 to $2 for fondant sits inside the $1 to $3 more a serving that the bakeries we checked on September 25, 2026 publish.

Upcharges the bakeries list:

  • Fondant: $1.00 more at Cake Works and Zell's, $2.00 more at Cake & Bake Fla, and $3.00 more at Sweet Confections.
  • Premium flavors and fillings: Zell's adds $0.50 to $1.00 a serving.
  • Sugar figures, flowers and toppers: Cake Works prices them separately from the per-serving rate.
  • Artwork, monograms, fondant bows and bands: Cake & Bake Fla says these can raise the per-serving price above its base.
  • Fresh flowers: Cake & Bake Fla never supplies them; the couple or the florist does, and the bakery places them.

How to price your own add-ons:

  1. Time the extra work once. If sugar flowers take 3 hours for one cake, price those 3 hours at your hourly rate plus materials.
  2. Turn it into a per-serving add-on for the next quote, so a bigger cake with the same flowers is not undercharged.
  3. Put each add-on on its own line in the quote, so the couple can remove one instead of asking you to cut your base price.

What Should You Charge for Tastings, Delivery and Setup?

Charge $25 to $40 for a tasting and $40 to $60 for local delivery and setup, and add mileage beyond your base area. Those are the ranges the bakeries we checked listed on September 25, 2026. Four list a tasting or consultation price from $25 to $40. The two that list a delivery price charge $40 to $60 locally for delivery and setup. Cake Works prices delivery per order, Zell's by mileage, and Sweet Confections does not list wedding cake delivery on its pricing page. Cake & Bake Fla also drops off free in its home Davenport and Disney areas.

Tastings and delivery fees continue to the right.

From each bakery's pricing page, loaded September 25, 2026.

Why these fees matter:

  • A tasting fee pays for the box. It also sorts couples who are ready to book from people collecting samples.
  • Credit the tasting to the order if you want booking to feel easier. Cretia Cakes applies its $25 consultation fee to the order.
  • Delivery is one of the riskiest parts of the job. A tiered cake that shifts in a car is your problem until it is set up, so price the drive and the setup, not just the miles.

For a full breakdown of per-mile and flat delivery pricing, see how to price delivery fees.

How Should Deposits and Final Payments Work?

Take a 50% non-refundable deposit to hold the wedding date, and collect the balance two to four weeks before the wedding. Two of the bakeries we checked take about half up front on a wedding cake: Zell's takes a 50% retainer, and Cake & Bake Fla's page names a 45% retainer in one paragraph and 50% in another. Cretia Cakes takes 50% on celebration cakes and wants the wedding balance two weeks before. Sweet Confections takes a flat $200.

When each payment is due at the bakeries we checked:

  • Cretia Cakes: 50% to book a celebration cake; for a wedding, the balance is due two weeks before.
  • Zell's Cottage Bakery: 50% retainer, balance two weeks before pickup or delivery.
  • Cake & Bake Fla: retainer to book, balance one month before the wedding.
  • Sweet Confections Cakes: $200 to book, balance 30 days before.
  • Cake Works Bakery: a deposit to book (amount not listed), paid in full one week before.
Watch out

Homegrown has no deposit-and-balance feature and takes the whole price at checkout, so take a wedding deposit and balance by invoice; Square Invoices on the Free plan charges 3.3% + 30¢ a card payment. Card fees apply to both payments. On a $264 cake paid as two $132 Square invoices at 3.3% + 30¢, you pay $9.31 in card fees. Zell's Cottage Bakery adds a 3.0% fee to card and PayPal payments; Homegrown has no way to add card processing to your customer's total, so build it into your per-serving price instead.

A deposit is also your cancellation protection. If a wedding is called off two weeks out, the deposit covers the date you turned down for other couples. Write the refund rules into your agreement, and see how to take deposits and partial payments on custom orders for the wording and the tools.

Where Should Your Everyday Cakes and Tasting Boxes Live?

A couple choosing a home baker wants to taste your cake before they book, so the page where people order your everyday cakes and a paid tasting box is the natural front door for wedding inquiries. Homegrown is $10 a month billed annually ($12.50 billed monthly) with no percentage fees beyond standard payment processing, and it gives you a storefront where your 8-inch cakes, cupcake dozens and a paid tasting box sit at fixed prices with pickup dates.

What that looks like for a cake baker:

  • A tasting box as a product. List a $25 to $40 tasting box, in the range Cake Works ($25) and Zell's ($40) charge for their tastings, and the couple pays before you bake.
  • Pickup dates and delivery. Customers pick a pickup day you set, and you can offer delivery within a radius you choose.
  • An "Ask a question" button on each listing. Couples can reach you from the cake they are looking at.
  • No commission. A $264 cake sold through your storefront costs you 2.9% + $0.30 in card processing and no commission on top.

How it compares with what cake bakers use now:

  • Hotplate has no monthly subscription and charges a 5% + $0.55 service fee on each order that you pay yourself or pass on to your customer. Passed on, as Hotplate's pricing example shows, it is $14.30 on a $264 cake paid in two orders, and you pay 2.9% + $0.30 card processing on each order.
  • Square Invoices on Square's Free plan is $0 a month and charges 3.3% + 30¢ on a card, or 1% with a $1 minimum by bank transfer. For the wedding cake deposit and balance, an invoice is often the better tool.
  • Instagram DMs and Venmo leave quotes, dates and payments in different places. The DMs cost nothing, but Venmo charges 1.9% + $0.10 on a payment to a business profile and 2.99% on a goods-and-services payment to a personal account.

What Homegrown does not do: it does not write your wedding quote or contract, it does not tell you what to charge a couple, it does not deliver or set up the cake, and it does not take a deposit and a later balance, since the customer pays in full at checkout. Customers create a Homegrown account to place a first order, and there is no timed drop or countdown release feature. Your storefront is listed on the Homegrown marketplace, but plan on most orders coming from people you send to your own link. Card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 is paid by you, with no option to add it to your customer's total.

We checked these on each company's pricing page on September 25, 2026: findhomegrown.com/signup, hotplate.com/pricing, and Square's fee page and Invoices pricing page for the Free plan. The cake is 44 servings at $6. Homegrown collects the full price when the order is placed and has no deposit-and-balance feature, so its row is one $264 payment; the other rows are paid as a $132 deposit and a $132 balance. Month totals are figured before rounding. Card processing is figured on the cake price; a platform that charges it on the total with fees, tips and tax runs a few cents higher. Hotplate's service fee is figured on each $132 order.

If a tasting box and a page of everyday cakes would bring you more wedding inquiries than a pinned Instagram post, you can set up your Homegrown storefront and list your first cakes and a tasting box tonight.

Can You Legally Sell the Wedding Cake You Are Pricing?

It depends on your state's cottage food rules and on what is in the cake, so check before you quote. Most cottage food laws cover shelf-stable baked goods, and frostings or fillings that need refrigeration, like cream cheese frosting, whipped cream, custard and fresh fruit, usually push a cake outside them.

What to check before you set a price:

  • Are cakes on your state's allowed list? Check which frostings and fillings your state names, not just the word "cake."
  • Does your recipe need the fridge? Sally's recipe, the one priced above, tells you to refrigerate the finished cake until it is served. Ask your state whether your version counts as shelf-stable.
  • Does your state cap cottage food sales? A yearly cap limits how many $264 cakes you can sell.
  • What must your label say? Cottage food rules usually set label wording, so check what your state requires on a cake that has no package.

The full explainer is can you legally sell wedding cakes under cottage food law. Rules change and vary by state and county, so verify your state's current rules with your health department or agriculture agency before you book your first wedding.

What Pricing Mistakes Do New Wedding Cake Bakers Make?

The most expensive mistake is quoting a flat price for "a wedding cake" without a serving count and a serving size. Every other mistake on this list follows from pricing the cake instead of the servings and the hours.

Mistakes to avoid:

  1. Pricing by the cake. A "$200 cake" can mean 30 servings or 118. Quote servings at a per-serving rate.
  2. Using party slices. At Wilton's party size, 6 and 9-inch tiers serve 36; at wedding size they serve 44. Say which one you mean.
  3. Skipping the minimum. A 20-guest wedding still needs the consultation, the contract and the drive. Cake Works sets $300.
  4. Giving away the tasting. A $25 tasting fee pays for the box and the hour you spend with the couple.
  5. Folding delivery into the cake price. The two bakeries we checked that list a delivery price charge $40 to $60 locally for delivery and setup. Put it on its own line.
  6. No deposit. Without one, a canceled wedding leaves you with an empty Saturday you turned other couples away for.
  7. Charging the same for fondant. The four bakeries we checked that publish wedding prices charge $1 to $3 more a serving for it.

More ideas for filling your calendar once your prices are set are in how to get more custom cake orders. If couples keep finding you through your birthday cakes, a storefront with fixed prices and a paid tasting box gives them one place to order a tasting, and you can start one on Homegrown from $10 a month billed annually.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I charge per serving for a wedding cake?

A home baker can charge $5 a serving for a simple buttercream wedding cake, $6 for piped or textured designs, and $7 or more for fondant. The four bakeries we checked on September 25, 2026 that publish wedding prices started buttercream at $5.00 to $8.50 a serving and fondant at $6.00 to $11.50. Quote the serving size too, about 1 x 2 x 4 inches.

How much do wedding cakes sell for on average?

Wedding cakes sell for $540 on average, according to The Knot Real Weddings Study of couples who married in 2025. The Knot puts the lower cost quartile at $300 and the upper at $840, and weddings of 101 or more guests averaged $620. A home baker charging $5 a serving would price a 118-serving cake at $590.

How much does it cost to make a two-tier wedding cake at home?

A two-tier wedding cake with a 6-inch and a 9-inch tier costs about $39.74 to make at Walmart.com prices checked September 25, 2026. That is $20.55 in ingredients and $19.19 in a cake drum, boxes, dowels, boards and parchment. It feeds 44 at wedding-size servings, about $0.90 a serving.

How much should I charge for a three-tier wedding cake?

A three-tier cake with 6, 8 and 10-inch tiers serves 74 at wedding size, so charge about $370 at $5 a serving or $444 at $6. A 6, 9 and 12-inch cake serves 100, which is $500 to $600 at the same rates. Add delivery, setup and any sugar flowers on separate lines.

Is $3 a serving too cheap for a wedding cake?

Yes, for most home bakers. A 44-serving cake at $3 is $132, and after the $39.74 cost and card fees it keeps you about $88 for roughly 11 hours of work, or about $8 an hour by our estimate. At $5 a serving, the same cake pays about $15.75 an hour.

Should the wedding cake price include delivery and the tasting?

No, charge them separately so the couple can see what each costs. Four of the bakeries we checked on September 25, 2026 list a tasting or consultation fee of $25 to $40, and the two that list a delivery price charged $40 to $60 for local delivery and setup, with more for longer drives. Some bakers credit the tasting fee to the order once the couple books.

These six guides cover the ordering process, the rules, deposits and the pricing formula:

A buttercream wedding cake priced at $5 a serving lands a little above what couples spend on average, and it pays you for the 11 hours behind it. Your everyday cakes are often where those couples find you first, so give them a page to order from: start your Homegrown storefront and list this week's cakes tonight.
